It’s tempting to buy into the idea that life-changing transformations require massive effort. And there’s a ton of companies out there wanting a significant amount of your money to help you make these changes. But think twice before diving in and upending your life.
Because here’s the truth: big changes don’t happen all at once. The most significant achievements start with a single, small step that builds momentum over time. Research proves that making small tweaks in your routine (NOT huge ones) is the most successful and effective way to change habits.
For example, consider taking a 10-minute walk everyday. Not a huge investment, right? Walk around the block. Yet, at the average speed of 3 mph, you would cover approximately 182.5 miles over the course of a year. That’s like walking from Boston to New York City. That’s not insignificant!
Or perhaps you want to write a book – quite a lofty goal!!! Yet if you dedicate yourself to writing only 200-300 words per day, you will finish that book in one year!
Time management books have a bunch of buzzwords for creating habits in bite-sized periods of time. Some call it “the power of small steps”, or “microsteps” or “10% better”. Regardless of the term, they all have the same message —the foundation of many success stories is NOT doing everything at once; it’s about starting small and staying consistent.
So imagine spending just five minutes a day on a new habit (or switching out an old bad habit for a new healthier one). While you are waiting for your child to get out of school. Or in between errands. Can you imagine how that could snowball into a more productive or joyful you?
