For many of us moms, driving entails time spent shuttling kids to school, appointments, or activities, often under tight schedules. While the car ride might technically be a small part of our day, it certainly can become one of the most stressful parts. To help myself stay calm as I dash across town with hockey gear, or Girl Scout cookies, I’ve researched mindful strategies to help us transform driving time into a calmer and more manageable experience. Here’s 10 calming strategies for moms while driving – help us stay focused, composed, and, most importantly, a safe driver, even in the busiest moments.

1. Curate a Calming Playlist
Music can significantly influence your mood, making it a powerful tool during a stressful car ride. Create a playlist with songs that help you relax or lift your spirits. Maybe you like soothing instrumentals or something more upbeat like my favs – 80s upbeat hits and country pop. Or perhaps a favorite podcast that inspires you. Many moms also find comfort in playlists designed for mindfulness or relaxation. Spotify and YouTube offer curated options, or you can customize your own based on your preferences. The right audio can shift your mindset into a calmness that can take on any crazy traffic. And bonus points if you have young children in a car seat in the back – the calming playlist might put them to sleep for naptime!
2. Use Essential Oils for Relaxation
Scents like lavender, peppermint, or citrus can have calming effects on the nervous system. Consider using a car diffuser or keeping an essential oil roller handy for moments when you need a quick reset. Roll a bit on your wrists or temples (when safely stopped, of course) and take a deep breath to center yourself.
It’s a good idea to test any essential oils before use to ensure you’re not sensitive to them. Don’t want to stay getting itchy while on the road – yikes!
3. Make Your Driving Space Comfortable
A comfortable environment can make a significant difference whether it’s a short pop around town or a road trip. Invest in an ergonomic seat cushion or a supportive neck pillow to reduce physical discomfort. For new parents, organizing the back seat with a car seat-friendly setup can ease the stress of managing older children or infants. A tidy, organized space helps you feel more in control and less frazzled during a busy day.

4. Practice Deep Breathing at Red Lights
When traffic slows or you’re stuck at a red light, take advantage of the pause to practice deep breathing. I recently took a mindfulness and meditation course through my local hospital.
Admittedly at first I thought this calming strategy for moms while driving was a bit too hippy-dippy for me. But I decided to trust my primary care doctor and go through the program. Oh my gosh, I LOVE IT! I had no idea just changing your breathing could bring such a sense of calm! I wish I had known this when I was a new mom!
5. Listen to Guided Meditations or Mindfulness Podcasts
Guided meditations and mindfulness exercises can be great companions on the road. Apps like Calm, Insight Timer, and Headspace offer short practices that are perfect for car rides.
If you don’t already have these apps, check with your local library before buying a subscription. My local library has free access to Headspace for residents (I love it). Many guided meditations are done with eyes closed BUT there are a several that are designed to be done with open eyes, helping you stay present and calm.
6. Affirmations for a Positive Mindset
Affirmations are simple yet powerful tools to keep a positive outlook while driving. Repeat calming phrases to yourself, such as, “I am a confident and safe driver, and I can handle this moment with ease.”
This strategy can be particularly helpful if you’re facing challenging situations, such as navigating through traffic with young children or dealing with aggressive drivers. Need a reminder during a stressful situation while driving? Write a few affirmations on sticky notes and place them where you can glance at them during your drive.
7. Plan Your Route Ahead of Time
I’m SO guilty of not doing this. Or rather I’m really good at knowing the route, but not giving myself enough time….
Unexpected delays can be one of the most stressful parts of driving. Using driving apps like Waze or Google Maps to plan your route can save time and reduce frustration. These tools can help you avoid traffic and suggest alternative routes if needed. For first-time trips to new destinations, check the route beforehand so you feel prepared. Leaving a bit earlier is another good idea to give yourself extra time and avoid the rush.
8. Keep the Essentials Handy
A stocked car can help you feel more prepared for any situation. Carry healthy snacks and water for longer trips to avoid irritability, and keep a small emergency kit for unexpected situations. For new moms, having extra supplies for the kids—like wipes, toys, or an extra blanket for the back seat—can prevent meltdowns and keep everyone calm.

9. Adopt a Positive Driving Mindset
Driving can sometimes feel like a chore, but shifting your perspective can make it more enjoyable. (Trust me, I know this is hard! I struggle with this one…..) View it as an opportunity to spend quality time with your kids or enjoy a moment of solitude. Whether it’s savoring a podcast you love or reflecting on a positive moment from your day, finding joy in the drive can make all the difference. 10. Visualize Your Day Going Smoothly
A bit like #9, this one is hard for me. BUT this is what the experts recommend, so I’m trying it. Visualization is a powerful tool to reduce stress. Before you start driving, take a moment to picture yourself navigating the day with ease. Imagine handling traffic calmly, being a safe driver, and arriving at your destinations on time. This mental preparation can help set the tone for a smoother, more positive experience, even if the day brings unexpected challenges.
We moms have enough stress in life making our kids stay moving in the right direction. Driving shouldn’t add to the stress levels. By implementing one (or a combination) of these calming strategies for moms while driving, we can make our time behind the wheel more manageable and even enjoyable.
